Keung To Interview: How MIRROR Handles Fame

Keung To interview: On the evening of May 11, 2021, after another electrifying show, MIRROR’s ONE & ALL LIVE 2021 completed its run, closing a six show chapter that has reshaped the local pop scene.

The six show residency put MIRROR and their 12 members at the center of Hong Kong’s conversation for days. On stage they delivered high energy performances, and offstage their unity and drive became the most moving part of the run.

“We hope we gave people a measure of courage”

“A new generation, to me, means an attitude,” Keung To said during a sit-down after the final show. The 22 year old reflected on how the group’s collective spirit carried them through months of preparation.

Keung To interview: The group bond that steadies him

Keung To said the longer he spends with his MIRROR brothers, the more he wants them to go further together. The twelve of them share a belief that courage and ideas, more than any other advantage, decide each step forward.

He described the time spent with the group over the past two years as priceless, both the hardships and the happy moments. That team support is the force that helps him stand up to pressure, fatigue, and self doubt.

From quiet offstage to commanding onstage

Keung To said he is introverted by nature, calm and mostly silent when not performing. He smiles or nods when someone speaks to him, but otherwise keeps to himself. “I need my own space and time,” he said.

He added that his private side can be more negative or rational, and he does not usually show that to fans. “Those are parts of me I filter out,” he said, reflecting on how keeping emotions private can be its own torment.

Keung To interview: Pressure, health and why he needs rest

Keung To acknowledged there has been little time to process what has happened to him since debut. “I do not have much time to digest things,” he said. He described the preparation for the concerts as exhaustive, putting in what he called 200 percent of his effort, and said the stress at one point caused him to faint during rehearsal.

He said winning music awards this year brought happiness and recognition, but also rising expectations. He told the interviewer he feels he still must earn the honors through hard work and steady improvement.

After the final show he said he hoped to rest and recover his best condition. “I hope after the concerts I can take time to rest and get back to form,” he said, echoing the wish of fans, friends, company staff, and family.

Motivation and the idea of becoming an adult

Keung To said his drive comes from an ideal image of performance that he keeps in his mind during long rehearsals. “When I want a performance to be good, I imagine it being brilliant, and that gives me the energy to make it happen,” he said.

Asked what he hopes to be as he grows older, he answered carefully: he wants people to feel it was a good thing that he ever appeared in the scene, that when he fades away people will still believe he could sing and had weight as an artist.

Keung To interview: Confidence, determination and the next stage

On whether confidence or determination matters more, he said determination to do something well creates confidence. “So far I still feel I do not have full confidence because I have not finished what I set out to do,” he said. “I want determination first; if I do that, confidence will follow.”

He said he does not aim to be a crowned superstar for its own sake. Rather, he hopes that when his career is over, people will feel his presence was a positive thing. “If that happens, I will be satisfied,” he said.

Keung To also spoke about his new single, “Master Class,” and quoted a line from its lyrics that expresses his aim to remain himself while accepting the support of others: “My goal is only to be like me, thank you for that torch, but I am not yet willing to make peace, quietly watch how I break through, if you do not yet understand, then wait for me.”

He said those words reflect the early stage of his growth and the work he still wants to do. At 22 years old, he called this moment merely the beginning of the path ahead, not its end. He turns 22 this year, and he said growth feels like a journey he has only just started.

Quick Q&A and an unexpected extra

The interview ended with a rapid fire question and answer segment and a playful art exercise. Keung To sketched an abstract poster of the MIRROR show while answering quick questions about his favorites and everyday apps, giving fans a glimpse of his private side.

That extra, the team said, was meant to show another side of the performer: capable, thoughtful, and at times quietly self critical. It also offered a reminder that the person behind the spotlight still needs time to recharge.
