New Balance this season unveiled the ellipse, a multifunctional sneaker that aims to blur the line between exercise and everyday life, encouraging wearers to “Lose track of time.” The design is meant to bring people back to basic physical sensations, focusing on breath, stride, and rhythm as they move through the city.
The ellipse is designed for everyday life, from quick jogs to catch the subway, to short walks after lunch, to light training after work, and weekend easy runs. For city residents who stand or walk for long periods, the idea of a single pair of shoes for the whole day is practical, reducing the need to change footwear while maintaining a consistent look.
For comfort, the ellipse continues New Balance signature Fresh Foam X cushioning in the midsole, emphasizing a balance between shock absorption and energy return at foot strike. The midsole thickness has been adjusted to provide stable support while retaining a soft underfoot feel, which helps reduce fatigue during extended walking. This setup is not limited to running, and it is particularly effective at reducing pressure buildup on hard surfaces.
The outsole uses a new rubber compound with distinct tread patterns for the forefoot and the heel, improving stability and grip during transitions. Whether on wet streets, subway platforms, or slick indoor floors, the outsole aims to maintain traction and reduce slipping risk. These city-oriented details give the ellipse added confidence and agility in real use.
The development process involved participants from multiple fields, including sprinter Gabby Thomas, middle- and long-distance runner Parker Valby, and cross‑industry representatives Action Bronson, Josh Allen of the National Football League, and Francisco Lindor of Major League Baseball. The lineup reflects the shoe’s positioning across training, everyday wear, and lifestyle.
The shoe is offered in three color options: fluorescent yellow, black, and emerald green, and it will be available for men and women simultaneously to meet varied style and function needs. The ellipse is priced at HK$999, approximately US$128. Fluorescent yellow and black will launch first, with emerald green arriving later.
